| Sam 'Champion' of Eco-Friendly Wares, Downplays Cost
"There's many simple, even money-saving ways that we can actually give our little bit of help in our own lives and in our own homes and make a little bit of a difference," said weatherman Sam Champion on April 19 "Good Morning America." But when it came to cost, the April 19 USA Today contradicted Champion: “Products that help people use less energy – or leave a smaller ‘environmental footprint,' as green advocates say – often are more costly than their alternatives, causing some to argue that going green is only for those who can afford it," said USA Today. Champion's segment focused on a special energy-efficient home built by BASF The Chemical Company that is 80 percent more energy efficient than other houses. The home incorporates wood from environmentally protected sources, furniture cushions made from plastic soda bottles, compact fluorescent lighting, modular recycled rug tiles, bamboo bedding, and laminate molding made of pressed wheat instead of solid wood.
Two Arlington mobile homes ruled too dangerous by Judge
Municipal Judge Stewart Milner has ruled two mobile homes in Southeast Arlington dangerously unfit for living in. The homes, owned separately by a mother and daughter, have more than $35,000 worth of repairs necessary to bring them up to code. In the daughter's case, the cost of repairs are more than the appraised value of her home. Judge Milner has given them 30 days to either fix things up or move out. The women say that they do not have enough money to make the repairs and will be forced to live in tents if they can't live in the mobile homes. Posted by Erin .
Rooms within a view
When Dhruba and Rupa Mishra went house hunting some years back, they immediately zeroed in on one of the newer properties coming up on the EM Bypass. Their flat located on the sixth floor of Hiland Park reflects their taste simple yet artistic. The apartment has a wonderful view and we were determined not to clutter it up with unnecessary furniture. We chose this place, as we wanted to move into an organised housing complex with all the facilities, says Dhruba, a senior consultant with TCS. The Mishras are not an exception. Nearly 60 percent of those who move into the high-rise apartments sprouting across the city are young working couples, feels real-estate developer Pradeep Chopra of the PS Group. Most people who move into these apartments are working couples in the age group of 30-40 years and have little or no time to spend in looking after their homes.
7 stops in meat country
A week of visits to slaughterhouses and butcher shops led to nights filled with carnivorous dreams. We may not have envisioned pigs twirling on a spit, but there were buttery soft lamb thymus sweetbreads smothered with warm tehina and monumental cuts of entrecote for asado. And Moshe, the son of Zalman the butcher from Jaffa, whispering some advice: "The meat of the females is always better than that of the males." The path to the perfect steak is not simple. The quality of the meat derives from a variety of factors: the origin of the beef, the gender, the conditions in which the animal was bred, its feed, the manner in which it was slaughtered, how the carcass is cut up and how the meat is improved, or aged. And that's all before we get to the person in charge of the grill, and the grill itself.
