Prefab - So Fab - at CA Boom Show & MOCA

Modernist Prefab homes and their architects will be at the CA Boom Design Show this weekend at the Santa Monica Airport's celebrity jet runway Barker Hanger to exhibit their designs and even take orders for your own home.

These green-friendly houses are finally gaining notoriety as a stylish and sound alternative for today's home construction. The architectural elements of prefab homes are made off-site, oftentimes using recycled or sustainable materials such as bamboo, and delivered with little assembly required to the homeowner's site. The end result is a customized home building project that sees a reduced amount of construction waste, substantial materials that can withstand heavy transportation and installation, and the smallest environmental footprint a house can make.

But, perhaps most of all, you'll have a cool looking house that's fit for celebrity neighborhoods and museums.

Sam 'Champion' of Eco-Friendly Wares, Downplays Cost

"There's many simple, even money-saving ways that we can actually give our little bit of help in our own lives and in our own homes and make a little bit of a difference," said weatherman Sam Champion on April 19 "Good Morning America."

But when it came to cost, the April 19 USA Today contradicted Champion:

“Products that help people use less energy – or leave a smaller ‘environmental footprint,' as green advocates say – often are more costly than their alternatives, causing some to argue that going green is only for those who can afford it," said USA Today.

Champion's segment focused on a special energy-efficient home built by BASF The Chemical Company that is 80 percent more energy efficient than other houses.

The home incorporates wood from environmentally protected sources, furniture cushions made from plastic soda bottles, compact fluorescent lighting, modular recycled rug tiles, bamboo bedding, and laminate molding made of pressed wheat instead of solid wood.

Ritter authorizes help for Holly tornado victims

Gov. Bill Ritter has authorized up to $1 million in state funds for tornado recovery efforts in Holly and Prowers County.

"We will continue to do all we can to help the people of Holly," Ritter said in a written statement. "I have been impressed beyond words with their resiliency and strength. Through this executive order, the state will provide financial assistance that addresses the community's immediate needs."

The funds will help cover costs such as temporary housing, mental-health services and infrastructure repairs.

The tornado damaged about one third of the homes in Holly. Forty-eight homes were destroyed or severely damaged and are considered uninhabitable.

State officials and Federal Emergency Management Agency are also working on transporting 50 mobile homes from the Hurricane Katrina relief zone to Colorado.
